A strong vocabulary helps with learning and improves communication skills for all students
One effective way to enhance communication skills is by expanding your knowledge of terminology and vocabulary. Research shows that having a good vocabulary and a solid understanding of terms from different subjects indicates high verbal-linguistic intelligence. It is believed that both general and subject-specific vocabularies sharpen and refine learning and communication abilities. Some teachers create vocabulary-building courses that last 12 to 15 hours at the start of the school year to prepare their students for learning.
To boost spoken vocabulary, teachers can have students organize words in syllabic order and say them out loud. Breaking down words by syllables not only helps students with their intonation but also makes them aware of the internal stress points in a word, which can improve their pronunciation. For spelling improvement, students should examine words letter by letter and engage in word-search puzzles and crossword puzzles using 10-12 words as part of their readiness course.
The letter-by-letter and syllabic examination of new words, along with pronunciation practice, can enhance each student's vocabulary and create an inclusive classroom that supports children with dysgraphia and other learning disabilities.
