In Indian classical music, taan is the main music component used for expanding the raag or piece/passage/lyrics that adds variety to the music composition. When one uses the words of the song/lyrics/text in taan, it is called Bol-Taan. Thus, a bol-taan is a taan sung to the text or lyrics of the piece/ song/ passage /poem/ bandish/ textual phrases.
On the other hand, an alap is systematic exposition of the melodic characteristics of the raga through notes or swara.
ABCs of Bol-Taan
A: Allowing a taan to be sung to the text
B: Basic component of music to expand a raaga through a set of phrases which present a concise melodic outline of the raga
C: Combining notes through the bol/words of the text or bandish (lyrics or set of phrases) which present a concise melodic outline of ragaa from the bandish could follow a set pattern or break it or being rhythmic or without being so
D: Developing phonic awareness, pronunciation, understanding emotions in lyrics, and placement of notes in one or more octaves
E: Evolving vocal qualities such speech variations, breath control, phonation, sonorousness through daily conscious practice or riyaz in bol-taans.
Since a taan can be practiced and performed by uttering the swara/note, or through the bol/ words from the bandish/text, it can be used as a part of education therapy in the inclusive education set-up as well as a part of musical-intelligence based instructional method.
There is a need to explore the use of taan-bol interventions in education, learning,medicine, psychiatry, counselling, cognitive, non-cognitive development, voice training, etc.

बोल-तान संगीत में ऐसी तान है जिसमें शुद्ध स्वरों के स्थान पर उनके नामों के संक्षिप्त रूपों का उच्चारण होता हो। चूकीं , तान शब्द का अर्थ है तानना या फैलाना, अतः स्वरों को तानने या फैलाने से ही 'बोल-तान' संगीत की उत्पत्ति होती है ।
जब सरगम से युक्ततान के बीच –बीच में गीत या कविता के शब्द रख दिये जाते हैं तो उसे बोल-तान कहते हैं । संगीत प्रतिभा एवं अकादमिक विषयों के जुड़ाव के लिए 'सपाट तान' का उपयोग किया जा सकता है।
