ABSTRACT: An intervention research was done in Chaksu block of Jaipur district of with an external funding by Room-to-Read organization to systematize the setting up and usage of string libraries in the rural elementary schools. A weekly display and use of 20 books on a string in the classroom was organized from about 400 books supplied to each school. First, the story books were read out to the students by the teacher followed by reading by the students. The following extended activities were also carried out ; (i) story telling; (ii) converting stories into role plays; (iii) book reviews; (iv) quotes from the books; (v) monthly wall magazine; (vii) monthly pocket magazine; (viii) three monthly community-based book fairs; (ix) big books on folklore and culture; (x) demonstrations from activity books; (xi) letter and word puzzles from library books. A teacher-made reading test using the before-and-after study design revealed a significant improvement in reading fluency of 25 students of a single teacher small alternative school in six months of the intervention with one hour daily in the library for children in the age group 9-14 years.
