Aphasia: Know neurogenically acquired learning disorder due to brain injury or surgery

Aphasia is an acquired neurogenic language disorder or learning disability due to an injury often to the left hemisphere leading to varying degrees of impairment in the primary language learning areas, namely, spoken language expression and language comprehension as well as written expression; left-right disorientation;and acalculia (acquired calculation disorder).


The condition suggests interventions involving gestures and pantomine for communication. Dance therapy is also helpful foe such children besides occupational therapy.


For some individuals with aphasia, the interventions with visual and semantics may work. Also, the use of music, humming, whistling to enhance right hemispheric functions may help, suggests Sarno, MT (Ed 1991) of the book 'Acquired aphasia' published by New York: based Academic Press.


It has been observed that that after brain injury or brain tumor operation, wrongfully. the fine motor therapy and cognitive therapy are ignored and over-emphasis of on gross motor physical therapy during the rehabilitation period that leads to a severity in aphasia condition.
