April Fools' Day: Get set to be fooled!

Punctuated by pranks, practical jokes, making fun, playing hoaxes and puns, the All Fools' Day is celebrated on the 1st of April each year. It's a widely recognized and observed special day cracking practical jokes and making people to perform general acts of foolishness.

The day is marked by good humoured jokes, hoaxes and errands of varying sophistication on coworkers, friends, acquaintances, family members, teachers, neighbours, media etc.

In some counties All Fools' Day has gained quite significance. For example, in Poland, the day is full of joke and various hoaxes indulged in both by people, social institutions and media.

In Scotland, the day is called 'Hunt-the-Gowk Day' and the traditional prank is to ask someone in a serious tone and with an air of urgency to deliver a sealed message requesting help of some sort, while the message reads "Dinna laugh, dinna smile. Hunt the gowk another mile".

Some people believe that All Fool's Day has its origin in Hindu festival of Holi on which people play practical jokes with the adage 'Sab maff hai, aaj Holi hai' or ' its Holi today, all's forgiven'

Generally joking and playing pranks expires at noon on April 1 and anyone who fail to respond with a good humour to a joke or prank is said to attract bad luck. These days pranks tend to center more around bogus telephone calls and media-foolery.

It needs to be remembered that All Fool's Day is a day for pure and harmless fun only and the pranks should be enjoyable without hurting anyone's feelings.
