According to an AI search on SEND programme, it is revealed that the Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), a term used primarily in education to describe children or young people who have learning difficulties or disabilities that make it harder for them to learn than other children their age, requiring extra support. It combines the previous term SEN (Special Educational Needs) with the 'D' for Disabilities, recognizing distinct but overlapping needs.

Key aspects of SEND:

  • Covers a wide range: It includes learning difficulties, physical problems, sensory impairments, communication issues, and social, emotional, and mental health needs.

  • Not always a diagnosis: A child has SEND if they have a learning difficulty or disability and need special educational provision, not just a formal diagnosis.

  • Focus on support: The term highlights the need for tailored teaching, resources, and environments to help these students succeed.
