Bicycles can be right topic for integrated STEM based skilling courses at middle school level

The work of this blogger, Dr Lalit Kishore on designing integrated curriculum has been mentioned in the book “Guide to Indian Periodical Literature” published in 1990. A special mention has been made to the paper “An integrated Science Curriculum Centered around Bicycle” that was published in the NCERT’s journal” School Science”. 26(3)

“Bicycle as a machine has the great potential to  be used for developing an integrated curriculum that connects different areas of study cutting across STEM  subjects including language learning by emphasizing unifying various concepts.

It is the duty of the schools and teachers to go for integration that focuses cross-curricular activities and multidisciplinary approaches to provide learning experiences through meaningful activities in STEM areas and real life including the issues of sustainability and climate changes,” remarked Dr Inshore saying that he has also developed an English language course for grade 6 students at Navodaya Vidyalaya, Khunga Kothi, Jind in 1986.

With the NCERT and CBSE encouraging STEM based skilling courses with credits system of assessment, the schools should try out 50-hour courses at the middle school level with the centrality of bicycle as the theme of learning.
