Sponsored by the WHO, the World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD. Sep 10)) is coordinated by the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP). Theme for the observance in 2025 is 'Changing the Narrative on Suicide'. "Suicide remains a critical global issue, affecting individuals and communities worldwide. In an effort to address this issue and encourage positive change," stated IASP.
WHO holds that suicide is a serious global public health issue, with over 700,000 lives lost each year due suicidal deaths. There is a need to enhance mental health and psychosocial support to people who get into the suicidal tendencies. It needs to be understood that suicides can be prevented through educational activities, commemorative events, press briefings and conferences, as well as Facebook and Twitter coverage.
Furthermore, for each suicide, there are more than 20 suicide attempts. Suicides and suicide attempts have a ripple effect that impacts on families, friends, colleagues, communities and societies. Suicides are preventable. Much can be done to prevent suicide at individual, community and national levels."
According to WHO, mental health and psychosocial support in emergencies and during the times of crisis is necessary for the people exposed to extreme stressors which is risk factor for mental health and social problems like suicides.
