Communicating Role of Medical Physicists to Public: Theme of International Day of Medical Physics

International Day of Medical Physics is being observed since 2013 on the 7th November to mark the birth anniversary Polish physicist Marie Sklodowska-Curie who had done the pioneering research work in the field of radioactivity.

This year, the observance is being held with the “Communicating the Role of Medical Physicists to the Public” to recognise and enhance the visibility of the profession.

Last year International Day Of Medical Physics has emphasized the need that the Medical Physicists be treated as Health Professionals and recognize their contribution to medical sciences for quality services, as conveyed Deepak Arora who is a noted medical physicists based in New Delhi. Arora combines both diagnosis and therapeutic aspects his profession. He has successfully blended expressive art therapy with his professional work as medical physicist.

Deepak Arora while wishing a Happy Medical Physics Day in his facebook post expressed his pride for being a professional physicist and frontline health worker who enjoys his work both behind and in front of the screen (See this year’s post of Arora)

According to the International Organization of Medical Physicists (IOMP), there are over 25,000 professionals around the globe united through their corresponding national and regional societies in around 86 countries under its umbrella.

Last year, On the occasion of the observance, Ibrahim Duhaini, IDMP Coordinator, had stated that the current pandemic crisis had brought remarkable challenges to healthcare systems around the world, and consequently, healthcare workers, Medical Physicists as well as many others were in the frontline in dealing with COVID-19 patients and they also deserve recognition and appreciation for their efforts.

He also expressed the dismay that many countries still didn't recognize medical physicists as healthcare professionals and hoped that this year’s theme is expected to bring awareness and shed light on the importance of our profession in the healthcare field and that the medical physicist is an essential key element not only to help in diagnosis and treatment of many diseases but also to ensure radiation safety for patients, professionals, and staff.

Hoping that the current difficulties won't stand in the way of the observance to honour our profession, he added, "Taking social distancing measures into consideration, this day can still be celebrated through online meetings, gatherings, contests, and parties."
