COVID-19 & Indigenous Peoples’ Resilience: Theme of International Day of World’s Indigenous Peoples


International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples (9 August, 2020) is being observed as a virtual event by the UN at the Indigenous Peoples and Development Branch – Secretariat of the Permanent Forum on Indigenous, informs their website.


The event with the theme "COVID-19 and indigenous peoples’ resilience" is bringing together indigenous peoples’ organizations, UN agencies, Member States, civil society and relevant stakeholders.




"The virtual commemoration will feature an interactive panel discussion on the innovative ways indigenous peoples continue demonstrating resilience and strength in the face of the pandemic while confronting grave threats to their survival. The aim is to highlight how the preservation and promotion of indigenous peoples’ traditional knowledge and practices can be leveraged more fully during this pandemic. Panelists will share good practices with the audience through an interactive virtual event that will focus on building back stronger," added the release informing that simultaneous interpretation of the discussion is going to be made available in French, Spanish, Portuguese and Russian.


In Arunachal Pradesh , there are 26 major tribes and more than 100 sub tribes in Arunachal Pradesh. The twelve tribes listed are: Adi (Abor), Aka, Apatani, Nyishi, Tagin, Galo, Khampti, Bugun (Khowa), Mishmi, Momba (Monpa), Naga tribe, Sherdukpen, Singpho. There are around 100 sub-tribes in the state. The state also has the Department of Indigenous Faith & Cultural Affairs (DIFCA) to protect indigenous culture and faith.
