COVID-19 outbreak & climate change require meaningful participation of youth globally: UN

The UN proclaimed International Youth Day (August 12) is being observed with the theme “Youth Engagement for Global Action” this year. The observance is meant to afford opportunity 'to celebrate and mainstream young peoples’ voice

s, actions and initiatives, as well as their meaningful, universal and equitable engagement.'

The UN is organizing 'a podcast-style discussion that is hosted by youth for youth, together with independently organized commemorations around the world that recognize the importance of youth participation in political, economic and social life and processes' along with urging people to join the social media campaign #31DaysOfYOUth.

The UN informed, "Enabling the engagement of youth in formal political mechanisms does increase the fairness of political processes by reducing democratic deficits, contributes to better and more sustainable policies, and also has symbolic importance that can further contribute to restore trust in public institutions, especially among youth. Moreover, the vast majority of challenges humanity currently faces, such as the COVID-19 outbreak and climate change require concerted global action and the meaningful engagement and participation of young people to be addressed effectively.

The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in severe economic and social impacts around the world. Young people are particularly vulnerable to the disruptions the pandemic has caused. Young people will form a key element in an inclusive recovery and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) during this Decade of Action.

In respect of Youth Responses to COVID-19, the UN stated that there was a need 'to ensure that youth are heard alongside other community and patient voices in the rollout of health and non-health interventions in response to COVID-19' by 'building up the capacity of youth to be able to make their own decisions on health and to take responsibility for health.'

There is going to be an on-line live event at 12:30 pm EDT today that is being organized by the UN Women and hosted by Miss Universe 2019, Zozibini Tunzi which features musical performances by Maia Reficco Viqueira, Manizha, Malkia the band, 25 May Movement, and Maria Brodskaya.
