Defining force with visual & text literacy: Research lesson for physics teaching with language art

A research lesson for grade eight students on the concept of ‘force’ was developed by the physics instructor in consultation with the language teacher at Plenum School in Himachal Pradesh to link common communicative language and technical language of science. The objective of preparing the research lesson was to forge an interdisciplinary link between physics communication and language art through focus group discussion and reflection. The procedure of listing out the learning sub-points for the articulated objective were as follows: the Common name of force: Push or pull; Visual symbols of pull and push; Conceptualizing force; Two effects of force; Understanding force in terms of its two effects; Visual symbolic representation of force; Formal definition of force; Vocabulary building; Pattern poem on force: Pyramid poem; Graphic depicted pyramid poem. Based on the research lesson containing the foregoing points, a power point presentation was prepared and reflected upon, critiqued and finalized. A forty-minute rehearsal was done by the the two-teachers on the finalized research lesson to get well-versed with its transaction.
