Develop camera sense with shift photography practice: Experimentation and learning are keys to it

The beginners of photography are often advised to experiment with with 'Tilt–Shift Photography' to get of photography and camera sense. The technique makes the use two two types of camera movements.

  • · Shift: Physical movements of the camera as a whole

  • · Tilt: Change in the orientation and position of lens with respect to the screen of the camera

However, a beginner must go step by step. He or she must experiment with, study and practice shifting the position of camera along the horizontal line to change the background of the subject.

A beginner must compose the picture with subject at the centre and take the picture from front then by shifting the camera to right or the left. Experiment by changing the locations and the subjects. After practice you will become apt in choosing the subject and and appropriate background.

Practice this technique for a week by taking pictures of different plants or flowers at different locations of your garden from front and then with left and right shift. Study the composition on the screen of the camera before clicking - give a thought to composition and click. Make a three-position collage and study the difference in profile and background.

As a beginner, I took the photographs of a flower from three positioned of the camera with the subject at the centre and looked the background before clicking. This was done to keep the camera lens parallel to the image plane.

The pictures in the collage are the parts of learning shift photography as a beginner with the intent to improve myself in shift-photography and with practice to become apt in it.

My teacher told me that not only I must take a photograph but tell a story about it either about the subject or the technique used in the taking the picture. Linking higher order thinking with picture is the idea or the concept, it coveys as a photographic art piece. And, I have taken to the advice to become a serious photographer who is learning photography and trying to discover its pedagogical use.
