Developing & Using Board Game for English Textbook in Hindi Medium School:Pedagogical Experiment


Developing and designing a contextual board game for children studying in inclusive education situation, is deemed effective. I have found that a board game drawn on a slate with counters and cards is able to individualize board games.


Here is an abstract of an action research on board game. Also, there is a child with special needs in the inset picture playing a board game made less cognitive load made by the teacher on his slate.


Abstract

With the decision of introduction of English as a subject at grade level one in Hindi medium schools in Rajasthan, it was thought to build the sight vocabulary of students for six words and recognition of letters therein by developing and using six words. The six words chosen were related to the school material such as PEN, PENCIL, BAG, BOOK, DESK, BELT, and ERASER. The board game was created with picture and word boxes on the four sides of the board. Two origami dices with picture and word faces were developed for four students playing at one game board. The objective of the pedagogical experiment was finding the efficacy of board game in making a transition to the textbooks. The experiment was conducted with material like worksheets with ticking, matching and searching-and-circling words and letters in puzzles. After sight vocabulary building for five lesson periods of 40 minutes each, the recognition exercises for letters in the six words was taken up for another five lesson periods. Thereafter, a transition to the prescribed textbook was taken up. The analysis of the experiment was done by observing students at work and theorizing some learning principles. A quick analysis of the parental reactions (N=30, lower middle class, urban seeting, state-board affiliation) showed significantly positive reactions (p =0.01, DF=1) when analyzed using chi-squared test.
