The United Nations designated April 23 as English Language Day, an annual celebration that commemorates both the birth and death of William Shakespeare. Initiated in 2010, this observance aims to foster multilingualism while honouring the history, culture, and evolution of the English language, emphasizing its significance as a global lingua franca.
This observance seeks to enhance awareness regarding the cultural influence of English and its impact on literature, education, science, and technology within various nations. Educational activities associated with this day include reading works by Shakespeare, expanding vocabulary, and engaging in literature-centric events.
Given that English is often taught as a second or third language in numerous countries due to its worldwide relevance, it is essential to implement English readiness and transitional courses that facilitate the shift from a native language to the language of instruction. This blogger has actively participated in these transitional courses by employing a padding strategy to cultivate an initial sight vocabulary for English prior to the introduction of the English textbook (refer to the inset clipping).
