SHORT NOTE ON ASCETICISM

Asceticism is a conscious and deliberate practice of self-discipline, simplicity, minimalism, and the avoidance of sensual pleasures aimed at enhancing spiritual growth. It plays a crucial role in the lives of Shaivite followers in India.

However, it is important to recognize that this practice is not simply about self-denial; rather, it involves profound learning, training, and mastery over the mind and senses to overcome material dependencies and reduce reliance on the physical world.

For contemporary adult seekers, this means shifting away from consumerism and materialism towards a 'natural' minimalist lifestyle—eliminating clutter and distractions to promote focus, inner tranquility, and mental clarity. By mastering the mind and controlling desires for rituals, pleasures, and comfort, one develops resilience and liberates vital energy, enabling the soul to strengthen its connection with the divine shiva-tatva or pure self.
