Experiential reading of concise material has skillful cognitive gains

“For using prescribed content to develop reading skills, it is required to break it up into concise 4 X 4 (four paragraphs of 4 lines each) by removing unnecessary wordiness from a page of the text. Collaborative and analytical discussion after the process based session of structured reading with gestures and pauses turns reading into experiential learning and acquisition of reading skills,” stated the Jaipur based educator-research Dr Lalit Kishore in his opening remarks during the training of teachers in reading skills.


The steps in the training of teachers of a school, which is English medium but most teachers had their own education through Hindi medium. The training involved immediate transfer of training by the training in girls’ small school.


The sessions in training were as follows.


1. Demonstration of reading properly 
2. Vocabulary practice
3. Reading to self to acquire confidence and flow
4. Reading aloud in front of others and receiving feedback


The teacher development in skills requires an expert resource person who develops the training module, provides experiential training in requisite skill among teachers,immediate transfer of training in the classroom and handing the process to the head teacher of the institution to be reflected as the supervised teacher behavior, says Dr Kishore.
