Squirrels are members of Sciuridae family - a family made up of small or medium-size rodents.
Since squirrels eat a piece of food bit by bit or they nibble their food. Their food bites are small and with pressure to chomp down on even hard food which is accomplished by their 4 large incisors.
Their teeth constantly grow throughout their lifetime. Therefore, in order to reduce irritation on their growing teeth, they are found chewing, nibbling, and biting things every now and then.
Not only that, they use their teeth to sense hardness, texture, density and temperature of the food.
It has been seen that the the pet squirrels indulge in playful bite or nibble which at times may draw blood of its keeper.
Since squirrels cannot digest cellulose, they depend on foods rich in protein, carbohydrates, and fats, That’s why love to eat nuts.
Through squirrels are mainly herbivores and often eat plants, green vegetation, nuts, seeds, conifer cones, fruits as well as fungi.
However, occasionally they catch and eat small birds, baby snakes, smaller rodents, eggs and insects.
