From Playgrounds to Classrooms: Uniting Sports and Education Early On

National Sports Day in India is celebrated annually on August 29 to mark the birth anniversary of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand.. Ministry of Sports has launched a three-day nationwide campaign from August 28 to August 30 with slogan "Tribute, Play, and Move" under the scheme "Khelega Bharat, Jeetega Bharat" which urges everyone one hour playing a game and do cycling on Sunday.
However, the implications for educational institutions is to make a shift towards kinesthetc-bodily intelligence based education (KIBE) at the foundational and primary education stages by promoting play way methods, folk games, educational games, tag games, hop-jump games, fun games, etc.
Schools must promote innovation of Sports Integrated Learning (SIL), which is a cross-curricular teaching method that blends physical activities and sports into academic subjects to promote holistic student development Students learn and show understanding through movement, games, and physical play rather than sitting passively.
I had experimented with KIBE to to promote self-awareness, social awareness, fine-and-gross muscle training, foundational literacy & numeracy , etc., while working with small school projects like Lok Jumbish, Janshala Programme, Brigde School Proejct of UNICEF. However, the project could not be mainstreamed but their viability was established.
