Get vertically literate or you’ll be redundant: ABCs of vertical literacy

According to Otto Scharmer of MIT, misconception of education as a vessel-filling activity continues. However, it needs to be shattered. He suggests that we needs to reshape our universities while also prototyping new ways of addressing urgent societal challenges.

“Education is the kindling of a flame, not the filling of a vessel,” the quote from Plutarch, he says that it is as true today as it was two thousand years ago.

Vertical literacy pertains to learning and applying knowledge, skills and organizational set-up for transformative change within and without through collectivisation, action learning and mission mode of operating, as I could gather.

ABCs of vertical literacy

A: Action learning made central for improving and harmonising development with nature and society by bridging knowing-doing gap for collective action

B: Basing educational institutions and social organisations on the unity of research, actions, and practical application for self and social transformations

C: Capacity building in self-awareness, social awareness and collectivisation for transformative action or positive change

D: Developing a holistic vision to catalyze social change and participatory and inclusive work culture

E: Evoking and mobilising evolutionary processes and collective consciousness by frequently reviewing, action learning, upgrading the entire operating system dynamically to mitigate negative effects of technological, ecological, and dominant societal hard push in for conveniences and comforts
