This year it is the 75th anniversary of the United Nations which is being observed with the theme "The Future We Want, the UN We Need: Reaffirming our Collective Commitment to Multilateralism"
According to the UN, The UN Day this year comes in a time of great disruption for the world, compounded by an unprecedented global health crisis due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with severe economic and social impacts to remind us that times of struggle can become an opportunity for positive change and transformation.
To commemorate the 75 years of the United Nations, Member States hold a high-level event on 21 September 2020, where they reaffirmed and recognized that our challenges are interconnected and can only be addressed through reinvigorated multilateralism.
The 75th anniversary of the United Nations falls in the middle of a global pandemic. Our founding mission is more critical than ever.
In his message, the UN Chief said, "In our world today, we have one common enemy: COVID-19. Now is the time for a stepped-up push for peace to achieve a global ceasefire. The clock is ticking. We must also make peace with our planet. The climate emergency threatens life itself...The Sustainable Development Goals give us an inspiring blueprint for recovering better...We face colossal challenges. With global solidarity and cooperation, we can overcome them...Let us realize our shared vision of a better world for all."
However, a Wikipedia post informs that the 'criticism of the United Nations has encompassed numerous arguments regarding various aspects of the organization, such as policy, ideology, equality of representation, administration, ability to enforce rulings, and ideological bias.'
It adds, "Oft-cited points of criticism include a perceived lack of the body's efficacy, rampant anti-Semitism, appeasement, collusion, promotion of globalism, inaction, abuse of power by nations exerting general control over the assembly, a number of legislative decisions seen as abandonment of, among other things, the prevention of armed conflict clause(s) detailed in the Charter of the United Nations, corruption, a total lack of efficacy in both pre-emptive measures and de-escalation of existing conflicts which have ranged from social disputes to all-out wars, and misappropriation of resources.
