Green School concept batted for during a webinar on World Environment Day by MEP in Jaipur


"If we wish to secure a sustainable future for the next generation, we would have to catch them young, right from school days by recasting the school eco-system and making classroom practices environment-centric," stated Dr. Lalit Kishore, working in NGO sector, during a webinar organized by Mother Earth Project (MEP) on the occasion of World Environment Day.


"A Green School subscribes for UN's agenda of Sustainable Development Goals. Such a school is based on sustainability framework of three pillars: Environment; Equity Economics. The two main characteristics of a Green School are that it is environment friendly and it emphasizes on sustainability literacy mastery," he elaborated.


A Green School required redesigning and managing the educational programme, physical place and management culture to support sustainability.


Designing of classroom learning environment and experiences (curriculum and activities) for students that will prepare them to lead the world toward a healthier, cleaner, more sustainable future, he added.


He batted that if the concept is implemented seriously, it is would result into reduced environmental impact; Enhanced learning outcomes or cognitive gains; better health and well-being; Increased environmental and sustainability literacy for learners.


Other discussants talked about certain ideas on environmental protections implemented in their institution. Also, concerns were raised regarding e-waste, plastic waste, pollution, inequity, poverty and exclusion.


Barton Rubenstein of MEP, moderated the discussion and said that the project focuses on sustainable actions that positively impact environment, community and local government officials for demanding better climate laws, racial justice, poverty mitigation, tree plantation and renewable energy. In short, the project is a global environment-saving initiative for creating and activating sustainable communities
