Happy Puthandu: New Year Day of Tamils
The Puthandu festival, which is the Tamil New Year, is being celebrated on April 14 in 2026. It marks the beginning of the Tamil month of Chithirai. This festival represents a new beginning, prosperity, and a time to think about how to improve life. It is important for cultural, religious, and farming reasons, as it celebrates the start of the harvest season, brings families closer together, and honors traditions with special meals, visits to temples, and prayers.
On this special day, Tamil families wake up early, decorate their homes with colorful Kolams, which are rice flour designs, and wear new clothes to start the year off positively. A key part of the celebration is eating Mangai Pachadi, a dish made with raw mango (sour), jaggery (sweet), neem flowers (bitter), chili (spicy), and salt. This dish symbolizes the different experiences in life, like happiness, sadness, anger, and surprises.
Tamils also go to temples to pray, especially for the first money transaction of the year, called Kai-vishesham, which is thought to bring good fortune. Families come together to share meals, and younger members ask for blessings from their elders. Therefore, Tamil New Year is a time to reflect on the past and look forward to the future, while keeping the rich Tamil culture alive.
