India will be celebrating its Independence Day of 2020 (15 August) in a subdued way due to coronavirus crisis. A national holiday commemorating the nation's independence from British through non-violent resistance and civil disobedience led by Mahatma Gandhi will be without usual fervour.
India's independence saw the country being partitioned on religious lines which was accompanied by violent riots, migration, population displacement and mass killing. The first Independence Day in 1947 was observed by hoisting of national flag at Red Fort by then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru followed by an address to the nation.
Earlier the day was marked in schools organizing Independence Rallies with band and hoisting of flag in schools as shown the inset video at Jillay village in Rajasthan. However, this year the flags will be hoisted by people on their house tops and institutional premises with no crowds.
