India celebrates its first Endemic Bird Day

May 9 this year was marked as the first Endemic Bird Day (EDB) in India and Global Big Day worldwide by following latter's dashboard to join and observe in progress of the bird sightings of the native species as they came in.
People were urged to take out binoculars or cameras out and go birding to document as many endemic species as they could on 9 May.
According to the organizers of the observance, the observance is expected to pick up to realize the aim of getting a better annual snapshot of the distribution and breeding of native bird species in various areas of India. More and more bird watchers will join with proper protocols like wearing light coloured clothes and maintaining silence for birding.
The endemic birds are those whose distribution is restricted to a defined area such as Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. The event will result in taking annual stock of such birds and maintain a proper record of native species, it is learned.
"The bird lists gathered during the EBD will give an annual snapshot of the distribution and breeding of these endemic species. In addition, the EBD falls on the same date as the Global Big Day, where birders all over the world will be out documenting their sightings," inform the organizers.
The time for the birding sessions was advised in the early morning and then late afternoon and a good number of birders joined the event from all over the country in the first Endemic Bird Day.
