Jaipur's famed Govind Dev Ji temple celebrates Janmashtami with live broadcast of celebrations

Updated: Aug 13, 2020

In Jaipur, Krishna Janmashtami is being celebrated as virtual event with live telecast worship and devotional performances at famed Govind Dev Ji temple this year due to lockdown restrictions. No devotees are being allowed to visit the temple which used to draw huge crowd of devotees earlier.

Various local channels are telecasting the singing of devotional songs, playing of flute and performances on the theme related life and works of Lord Krishna.

Krishna Janmashtami is an annual Hindu festival that celebrates the birth of Krishna, the eighth avatar of Vishnu on the eighth day of the dark fortnight in the lunar month of Shrawana of the Hindu Calendar which falls on Agugust 11 this year.

The day is often marked by dance-drama enactments and diorama display of the life of Krishna, devotional singing through the midnight when Krishna is believed to have been born, fasting, night vigil, festivities and sweets distribution is held at many places.

Krishna Janmashtami is followed by the festival Nandotsav in mathura and Vrindavan, which celebrates the occasion when Nanda Baba distributed gifts to the community in honour of the birth of Krishna.

The tradition of Rasa Lila is popular in Mathura and Bharatpur regions. In Kurukshetra, temples organize recitation of Bhagavata Purana and Bhagavad Gita, I wrote earlier on merinews portal.

In many countries migrant Hindus celebrate the festival with great enthusiasm. ISKCON temples worldwide celebrate Krishna Janmashtami in which the followers take part with devotion and piety.
