With emergence of new diseases and spread of health services, the interdisciplinary area of biomedical engineering dedicated to design and development (D&D) of biomedical equipment and devices to aid the recovery or improve the health of individuals has become a study course.
Often, the following three kinds of devices are designed, tested or standardized by a biomedical engineer.
· Internal devices (Examples: stents; artificial organs, etc)
· External devices, (Examples: braces and supports in orthotics; ventilators, heart and lung machines, protective gears of health workers for not catching infection from patients)
· Creating and adapting medical equipment of bio-medical and bio-technology labs and research work
· Designing devices, tools, instruments, machines and equipment for pharmaceutical industry
Besides sound knowledge of engineering, the other areas subjects for learning are biology and health conditions during various diseases.
The other expertise and skills that are required to ne acquired are inventive skills; computing skills; analytical thinking skills; design thinking skills and problem solving skills.
