The Nandavarta, also known as Nandyavarta, is a detailed, nine-pointed version of the swastika and is one of the eight auspicious symbols in Jainism called Ashtamangala. It symbolizes spiritual abundance, joy, and the belief that followers of the Jina receive blessings from all sides. In Jainism, the Nandavarta swastika represents profound spiritual principles and the journey towards liberation.
In contrast to the common swastika, which points in four directions and emphasizes the cycle of rebirth, the Nandavarta swastika highlights the elevated spiritual accomplishments of the soul. Its name comes from Nandi, which means joy or prosperity. It conveys the idea of "pleasure and plenty" in terms of spiritual wealth.
The nine points of the Nandavarta symbolize different forms of wealth—material, mental, physical, and spiritual—that a devotee and seeker can acquire from all directions through their devotion to the Jina. Additionally, it emphasizes the importance of rising to higher states of existence for spiritual abundance, which includes Purity of Soul, Non-Violence, and Equanimity.
A Poem on Significance Nandavarta Jain Symbol
The Jain Nandavarta, a swastika grand,
A different path from cycles we have known,
It speaks of freedom, held within its hand,
And higher realms where souls have truly grown.
From "Nandi," joy it draws its blessed name,
A promise of rich treasures to be found,
Not earthly goods, but purity of flame,
Where spiritual abundance does abound.
Nine points it holds, wealth in every way,
Material, mental, strength, and spirit bright,
A gift from Jina, lighting up the day,
Guiding the seeker toward eternal light.
But even here, transcendence is the key,
To soul's true peace: non-violence, equanimity
