The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) requires affiliated schools to have a well-stocked library, typically needing at least five books for each student, not counting textbooks, with a total of at least 1,500 books to serve as an important learning resource center.

A library period is mandatory in the school schedule to encourage independent reading, improve vocabulary, and develop research skills. Besides lending books, these periods are meant for reading, exploring, thinking independently, and cultivating a passion for literature.

It is recommended that school librarians utilize this time for storytelling, book reviews, teaching research skills, and interactive learning to make the library experience more engaging.

The librarian, considered part of the teaching staff within the academic structure, should promote independent thinking and curiosity, enhance vocabulary, imagination, and confidence by providing access to information beyond textbooks, thus supporting the overall development of students. Within the school environment, the library plays a crucial role in the curriculum, aimed at encouraging a reading culture and transforming it into learning.
