Meaning of visual symbol and need for training to make teachers visual-literates

Visual symbols are quick line drawing or pictorial representations of reality for recognition and should not be confused with artwork. They create mental images to which abstract symbols can be associated as most (over 70%) of humans are visual learners.

The different kinds of visual symbols can be in form of line drawings (continuous, successive implied, geometric/ shape/ shadow drawings); minimum-stroke sketches, un-detailed cartoons, comics or strip drawing; diagrams; stick figure charts as well as graphs, maps, and iconic shape posters.

Visual symbolism or pictorial semiotics has an essential role in human communication since we are looking for deeper associated meaning of direct reality. Visuals are significant semi-concrete transitional milestone to semi-abstract to abstract reality for learning with comprehension and active memorization.

Some visual symbols besides learning language (abstract representation of reality) have cultural meaning too, such as, red rose represents love and skull with bones represent danger.

Here in the in the inset video, the symbol of red rose has been drawn. A teacher as a classroom and on-line communicator must able to draw 20 cultural and 80 academic or disciplinary visual symbols to be called visually literate. Training should be imparted to teachers to become visual-literate.
