Recognising the power of resilience, reconciliation and the human spirit, the United Nations General Assembly has designated July 12 as the International Day of Hope.
The UN states, "Ultimately, this day is a reminder that even in difficult times, hope remains a transformative force. It can bridge divides, drive progress, and uplift the human spirit. The International Day of Hope invites all of us to pause, reflect, and recommit to a future built not on despair or division, but on shared humanity and the unwavering belief in a better tomorrow. Better tomorrow is worth holding on to."
According to the UN, hope contributes to peace building by initiating the process through the promotion of trust and dialogue, and fostering greater social cohesion and reconciliation.
POEM ON VIRTUE OF HOPE
In the cradle of hope, peace begins to rise, With trust as the seed, it blooms in the skies,
Dialogue whispers softly, uniting the hearts,
Fostering bonds where reconciliation starts.
Hope's the fabric of healing's embrace,
A powerful force in this delicate space,
Personal journeys of strength intertwine,
In collective resilience, our spirits align.
Social trust flourishes, a garden of grace,
Encouraging voices, each finding their place,
Reducing chasms that once stood so tall,
Strengthening identities, together we call.
With optimism's virtue, our spirits held high,
A collective responsibility, reaching the sky.
Let hope turn to action in care and in will,
Thro' dialogues tender, our purpose we fill,
