The 56th Mother Earth Day will be celebrated on Wednesday, April 22, 2026. This year's theme is "Our Power, Our Planet," which emphasizes the importance of working together for environmental sustainability and fighting climate change. As always, there will be events like community cleanups, tree planting, and educational campaigns to help create a sustainable future. The focus is on how individuals, communities, and organizations can make a positive impact on the environment by addressing the urgent issues of climate change, the need for renewable energy, and teaching future generations about the importance of biodiversity and pollution control.

According to the UN, the goal of this observance is to acknowledge the Earth as our shared home and to encourage harmony with nature, balancing economic, social, and environmental needs. The day aims to address climate change, loss of biodiversity, and pollution. The UN warns that "climate change, human-caused changes to nature, and crimes that harm biodiversity, like deforestation, land-use changes, increased agriculture and livestock production, or the rising illegal wildlife trade, can speed up the destruction of our planet." They urge the global community that now, more than ever, we need to transition to a more sustainable economy that benefits both people and the planet.

It is essential to follow UNESCO's 'Education for Sustainable Development framework (ESD) for 2030' by incorporating environmental sustainability topics into educational systems to promote a sustainable future. As stated by UNESCO, curricula based on ESD equip learners with the knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes necessary to make informed choices regarding environmental integrity and economic viability.

Moreover, ESD-focused education is a lifelong learning journey that enhances competencies such as critical thinking, future-scenario planning, and collaborative decision-making to tackle issues like climate change and inequality. This approach is learner-centered, participatory, and action-oriented, emphasizing the transformation of society rather than merely teaching about it..
