Music as a path to self-realization and god realization: A short mote and a Decastich

Short Note

Indian music has been significantly influenced by our ancient scriptures, notably the Bhagavad Gita. The term 'Gita' refers to the celestial song sung by Lord Krishna, which inspires us to lead a life characterized by unwavering devotion, selfless action, and liberating wisdom. The devotion pathway profoundly impacts our traditional music, which includes both classical and folk styles.

It is crucial to acknowledge that historically, music has been instrumental in the evolution of the Bhakti movement and the spread of ethical life principles. The teachings of the Gita find their most potent expression in musical forms such as devotional hymns, prayers, and collective singing, as music facilitates concentration and instills peace in the mind. The relationship between music and the Gita is also reflected in the titles of several contemporary Ragas, which draw inspiration from various names of Lord Krishna, such as Kanhara, Bihari, Shyam Kalyan, Mohan Kalyan, Krishna Kalyan, Govardhani Todi, among others.

In Indian culture, music plays a crucial role in the widespread promotion of spirituality, as it transcends the divisions of caste, race, creed, and religion. It possesses the ability to unite individuals and connect them with the one supreme God. Music, in its essence, is profoundly spiritual; it has the capacity to unite people and foster meaningful connections. Music can transform individuals and, consequently, change the world.

A Decastich Poem

A note, a hum, a gentle start,

A song that whispers to the heart.

A rhythm deep, a flowing stream,

Reflecting back a hidden dream.

The ego fades, the worries cease,

Replaced by joy, a quiet peace.

Beyond the sound, a silent grace,

A glimpse of love in time and space.

The music ends, the soul takes flight,

Towards the source, the purest light.
