Correcting pointing out gesture of dysgraphics through simple ergonomics of modification of glove

'Look, point and say' (LPS) is an effective way to teach children with dysgraphia. However, due to fine motor and coordination challenges, children have to undergo, movement therapy and gesturing a part of relevant physiotherapy..

For the child, shown in the collage, owing to fine motor muscles being underdeveloped, he had the problem in gesturing of pointing out to things hindering his learning.

A thick cotton glove was modified so as to allow the 'pointer finger' of the dominant hand to jut out while rest of the fingers coiled in as a fist that got arrested in the glove.

After a month of school hours use, the child was able to acquire the point-out gesturing and the glove was discarded. It also improved the clamp grasp the child.

"Ergonomics literacy by teachers and educators of children with special needs is essential to modify the articles of the their daily use to improve their physical conditions caused by neurological disorders," says Dr Kishore who had been researching at Disha in Jaipur for the last four years.

Ergonomics is an up-coming area of applied science and engineering related to common things and is concerned with modifying, designing and arranging or placing things that people use at work, study and dwelling places enabling them to interact with and use things efficiently and safely as per their needs.
