National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF-SE) has emphasized on enhancing Skill Education in classes VI to X as an integral part of the curriculum by including it as a mandatory subject of study by laying stress on practical skills alongside traditional academic subjects. This can only be done by establishing well-equipped 'Composite Skill Labs' and 'vocational training centers' within schools.
According to NCF-SE, Vocational Education intends to develop capacities for sustenance,work, and economic participation. It also develops values and sensibilities towards physical work and an appreciation of the dignity of all labour from the very early stages of school through higher education.
In the 139th meeting of the Governing Body of the CBSE, it has been decided that all the CBSE-affiliated school must have ‘Composite Skill Lab’ along with all necessary equipments and machinery to effectively implement the recommendations of NEP and NCF-SE.
The aim is to provide 'training on practical skills aligned with industry needs, enhance employment prospects for students in various trades and vocations, enable exploration of diverse career pathways beyond traditional options, and foster entrepreneurial capabilities among students.'
The CBSE has made it mandatory for the schools to have a 'Composite Skill Lab with all necessary equipments and machinery' and get it accomplished within coming three years
The options are to have one Composite Skill Lab of 600 sq. ft. area for classes VI–XII, or two separate labs of 400 sq. ft. area each, one for classes VI–X and the other for classes XI–XII.
In this regard, the additional details regarding the setting up the new facility, the necessary materials for teaching various skill subjects, will be available in the curriculum guidelines are going to be provided on the CBSE website shortly.
