Observances captured by market forces and e-commerce to drain away social cause funds: Spl on IDEP

Amid the COVID-19 pandemic crisis, International Day for the Eradication of Poverty (IDEP), 17th October, was observed with a campaign on social media by using hashtag #EndPoverty. People were urged for promoting ‘the call to action to connect with people from around the world who have joined the fight to overcome poverty.’

Also, A commemorative event to be held in New York to give a call to online community is asked to use #EndPoverty to share messages about the observance.

“In a world characterized by an unprecedented level of economic development, technological means and financial resources, that millions of persons are living in extreme poverty is a moral outrage,” conveyed the UN website.

It added, “Poverty is not solely an economic issue, but rather a multidimensional phenomenon that encompasses a lack of both income and the basic capabilities to live in dignity.”

According to the UN, persons living in poverty experience many interrelated and mutually reinforcing deprivations that prevent them from realizing their rights and perpetuate their poverty, that includes the following aspect.:

  • Dangerous work conditions

  • Unsafe housing

  • Lack of nutritious food

  • Unequal access to justice

  • Lack of political power

  • Limited access to health care

“The UN, corporate sector and current NGOs now have limited themselves to event organisation for the observations meant to reinvigorate social action for change. The market forces are a loving it since all observances are have become a source of income for them through event management including grand celebration through supply of the ‘token material’ including report writing on the ‘successful organisation of the event,” said a social activist in Jaipur adding that the way this observation was held have made the poor more deprived.
