Today is the birth anniversary of Bharat Ratna Gulzarilal Nanda (4 July 1898 – 15 January 1998) who served two times Acting Prime Minister of India. He was an economist and later played a key role in the development of Kurukshetra as a religious and cultural tourist place.
He was true Gandhian who lived a simple and frugal life and had no personal property at the time of his death. In his honour, Kurukshetra University has set up the Gulzari Lal Nanda Centre of Ethics, Philosophy, Museum and Library. Also, there is a Gulzari Lal Nanda Memorial called 'Sadachar Sthal' at Brahma Sarovar of Kurukshetra.
“Let us join hands to fight the challenges of crisis collectively by learning prudence from Bharat Ratan Gulzarilal Nanda whose principled life based on ‘Needonomics’ flowing from Gita has many lessons for us,’ opined Former Vice Chancellor M.M. Goel, a known spiritual economist while speaking at Gulzari Lal Nanda Centre of Kurukshetra University Kurukshetra in 2019.
Ode to Bharat Ratna GL Nanda
A placid kind person, frugal and frail,
No pomp-n-show in Nanda's travail.
A modest dwelling, a humble meal,
He did selfless work with a loving feel.
Mended clothing and worn out shoes,
Nanda's social work style was ever new.
Contentment found in his mindful grace,
With gracious smile on his inviting face.
Calm frugal life with no frantic rush
Nanda relished quiet moments much
A kind heart treaded the Gandhian way
All to share and partake, come what may
