Every year the World Environment Day is observed globally on the 5th June. In 2026, the theme of the observance is “Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future.”

Coordinated by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), th campaign this year calls for action against climate change. The emphasis needs to be on the ecosystem resilience which calls for the nature-based solutions to combat carbon build-up and scale circular zero-waste economies.

The 2026 edition of the observance carries the urgent action as the current meteorological data confirms the past 11 years have been the hottest on record, emphasizing that planetary safeguards are no longer optional, but mandatory for all countries.

Besides the sustainable living pledges, strict home waste segregation, eliminating single-use plastics, and starting a personal household waste management system are required.

The UN Chief, in his message said, "The world is heading for a temporary overshoot above 1.5 degrees. Every fraction of a degree brings greater harm – especially to the most vulnerable. Our task is to make that overshoot as small, as short, and as safe as possible – and rapidly bring temperatures back down. That means slashing emissions. Accelerating a just transition away from fossil fuels and towards renewables – the only sustainable path to lower costs and to real energy security. Cutting methane – one of the fastest, cheapest ways to limit near-term warming."

He called upon the world community to protect forests, land, and seas and act for their environment and future
