BHAGAVAD GITA ON DIVINE OR SPIRITUAL QUALITIES

HH Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada in his English translation and commentary in 'Bhagavad-gita As It Is' (1972), has talked about the qualities of a divine or spiritual person by Lord Krishna in five verses in Chapter 16 of the scripture, e,g. 16.1-3 and 16.23-24 as follows

  • The Blessed Lord said: Fearlessness, purification of one's existence, cultivation of spiritual knowledge, charity, self-control, performance of sacrifice, study of the Vedas, austerity and simplicity; nonviolence, truthfulness, freedom from anger; renunciation, tranquility, aversion to faultfinding, compassion and freedom from covetousness; gentleness, modesty and steady determination; vigor, forgiveness, fortitude, cleanliness, freedom from envy and the passion for honor-these transcendental qualities, O son of Bharata, belong to godly men endowed with divine nature. (BG: 16.1-3)

  • But he who discards scriptural injunctions and acts according to his own whims attains neither perfection, nor happiness, nor the supreme destination. One should understand what is duty and what is not duty by the regulations of the scriptures. Knowing such rules and regulations, one should act so that he may gradually be elevated. (BG: 16.23-24)
