Required radical mindset change to end violence against women and girls worldwide

In her comment on an article by Dr Lalit Kishore on the occasion of IWD-2002 in Merinews portal (now closed), Simantini Kishore wrote, "On Keeping in with the United Nations 2009 theme 'women and men united to end violence against women and girls' I would like to appreciate the current 'ring the bell' initiative which is a very simple yet could be effective as a short term measure for preventing violence against women and girls. Yet in perspective of the long term success of the 2009 UN women’s day theme, it will take a radical change in the mind set- be it social, cultural as well as personal to end violence against women and girls worldwide."

The news story "Theme of this year's International Women's Day declared" by Dr Lalit Kishore is being reproduced here on IWD-2022

The United nations has come out with the 2009's theme for International Women's Day to be celebrated on March 8. This year's theme, recongnised and followed worldwide, is going to be 'Women and men united to end violence against women and girls'.

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY (IWD) is marked on March 8, every year. It is a major day of global celebration for the professional, cognitive, economic, political and social achievements of women. The day is meant to portray the power of women in the modern era and how vital their role is in the society.

Started as a political event, IWD has become a holiday in many countries. In India, IWD holds a lot of significance. Many celebrations are held during the day. In some celebrations, the day has lost its social and political flavour and has become simply an occasion for lip service and tokenism.

Every year, a political and human rights theme as designated by the United Nations to create the social awareness of the struggles of women worldwide, are brought out and examined in a hopeful manner. In 2009, the theme 'Women and men united to end violence against women and girls' has been decided by the UN.

Below are some of the global UN themes used for International Women's Day in since year 2000.
