School need to weave in emotional intelligence components as parts of their social pedagogy

Updated: May 28

This blogger's work "Schools need to focus on developing students emotional intelligence along with cognitive' published in merinews.com on January 20, 2015 has been cited in "Comparing Emotional Intelligence Levels in Teachers of the Year in Elementary School, Middle School, and High School and How Their Emotional Intelligence Traits Are Exhibited in the Classroom" by Barrios, Michelle (2016), Brandman University, as part of ProQuest Dissertation & Theses

Yet another article of the blogger "What is emotional intelligence all about?" was published in merinews.com on 04 November, 2012. The gist of which goes as follows.

The issue of incorporating the development of Emotional intelligence (EI) of learners has come to the fore with the inclusion of its testing for admission to management courses.

There is no denying the fact that human beings are feeling-thinking-learning beings. With such a perspective of humans in mind, EI is broadly regarded as a human potential or ability to perceive identify, assess, and manage the feelings and emotions of oneself, others, and groups.

EI is usually measured using self-report questionnaires and has stronger relationships with the mental health and personality traits.

Howard Gardner's theory of Multiple Intelligences describes two components of EI. First, interpersonal intelligence is the human potential that includes the ability to understand the intentions, motivations and desires of other people. Secondly, intrapersonal intelligence is the one that includes the ability to understand oneself, to appreciate one's feelings, fears and motivations.

Salovey and Mayer hold that EI is the ability to perceive emotion, integrate emotion to facilitate thought, understand emotions and to regulate emotions to promote personal growth. Thus, EI is the human potential with four functions as follows: (i) perceiving emotions; (ii) understanding emotions; (ii) Using emotions, and (iv) Managing emotions.

The blogger holds that 'the school need to weave in emotional intelligence components as parts of their social pedagogy and schools as webs of mutually respectful relationships..'
