Short academic ABC poems have potential to improve reading and higher order thinking skills

A short academic ABC poem is a five-line poem representing the summary of a concept wherein each line of the poem begins with a letter in the alphabet from A to E.

However, people have tried A-to-Z poems on various topics by playing with the words to create long 26-line poems starting with A and moving in order to reach Z.

Here is an example of short academic ABC poem on the concept of ‘authoritarian rule’ in political science.

ABC POEM ON AUTHORITARIAN RULE

A: All the more centralised state undermining the Constitution, precept of Republic and federalism

B: Bias in favour of corporate interests, rich and profiteers coupled with gender and social bias

C: Creating and striking fear through state agencies on those who ask question and have different point view to curb freedom of expression

D: Divided society and societal institutions pushed into cult of rivalry and hatred to fish in troubled waters

E: Establishing and pursuing mindless majoritarianism coupled with disrespect for diversity and relentless propaganda for praise of rulers and condemnation of all others

Creation of such poems by students are reported to have improved the reading habits and provided training in summary writing skills as well as higher order thinking skills.
