Significance of being infographic literate in digital times of visual disruptive communication

Infographic literacy pertains to recognising, meaning making, creating, and communicating through specific visual-codes and text-codes (infographic codes) related to particular piece of textual information. The presentation of information (facts, concepts, processes) in graphic codes and interpreting it requires the basic infographic literacy skills or related listening, speaking and reading skills. Many power-point presentation softwares provide the list of graphic modes of presenting information.But requires to learn the basics of picture / graphics reading skill, text elaboration skills and communication skills.

The word 'Infographics' is a blend of two words 'Information' and 'Graphics' which implies that it an integrated way of communicating by making use of text and visual codes.Infographics as a branch of knowledge itself, requires acquisition of its text-literacy (vocabulary, terminology, glossary) and visual-literacy (graphical visual codes)


Readiness and mastery over basic visual literacy skills and infographic strategies can engage learners to think quickly and critically as they can create opportunities for learners to derive meaning from visual codes of textual information. Since most learners are visual learners, by acquiring the graphics listening, recognition, speaking and reading skills that they become proficient in seeing, recognising, understanding, evaluating, applying, or creating conceptual visual representations contained in infographics.


After gaining infographic literacy skills, writing and drawing skills related to infographics are needed to be learnt to be able to communicate re-organized information well.


Thus, infographics can be seen as acquired knowledge, skill and attitude to present information with more visual or graphically appealing way in the present times of digital media. For example Google map is graphic information that shows movement in a clearer and easily decipherable way.


A lot of infographics available on Google to show the relationships between different numbers and text in visually appealing versions of a 'graph or chart.' After, reading or going through these infographics you will start reading them exceedingly well. That is a good way of 'learning by doing' for educated people.


A sketchnote is an infographic chart or dual-code chart on a concept or topic. The inset visual shows the graphic codes and the blanks for the text codes as key-phrases on the topic. In art-integrated learning approaches, The students are given assignments to prepare sketchnotes as infographic charts. Visual codes in the sketchnote are the commonly used graphic codes as part of infographic literacy. Also, visual disruptive in today's digital world has gained a lot of importance since most people are visual learners.
