Significance of Pongal and Makar Sankranti festivals

Updated: Jan 13, 2022

Makar Sankranti and Pongal festivals symbolize 'Uttarayan' or the beginning of the northward journey of the Sun and are associated with harvest season with prayers to bring prosperity, peace and harmony in life.

Here is my sentence acrostic on PONGAL.

P: Praying to the Sun God and cooking the new-rice recipe called "Pongal" in South India
O: Observed on or around January 14 for four days in which farmers express their gratitude to Sun God and cows
N: North India celebrates Makar Sakranthi as a harvest festival at the same time G: God-Sun moves in chariot driven by seven horses for six-months-long journey northwards or in Uttarayan and moves into the zodiac Capricorn or Makaram Rashi
A: Advent of spring season and end of winter
L: Lighting fire with all the trash and discarded things of the house

Makar Sankranti is associated with kite flying and here is my haiku on kite

Haiku:

Fly kite for pure fun.
Watch it float and soar in sky.
Forget all awhile.
