
At the middle school level, the CBSE has stated offering Skill Modules as a part of NEP-2020 to make a choice from the list 33 skills. While at the secondary the choice can be made out of 40 skills as full-fledged areas of study
Here is the summary of the stand of the NEP-2020 on skill education

1. To prepare students for the 21st century skills needed for economical and societal development in the era of fast changing technology

The CBSE justifies the skill courses by stating the following.
The need of the times is to make job-oriented education both acceptable and accessible right from the school level onwards to college and to the job market..... In order to upgrade the skills and proficiency of the young generation and also to provide awareness to explore various career options, the CBSE has started offering 40 courses at the Senior Secondary level. The goal of skill education isto provide students with procedural knowledge and skills that will enable them to flourish and succeed in real-world situations, both in business and in life. It aims to provide a holistic, purposeful, and skill-oriented education that instills a sense of usefulness and responsibility in the students
