Slam and power poetry: An introductory note


Spoken word lyrics are mostly written in commentary format. This art form is often used to convey important social messages that raise awareness of topics such as inequality, exploitation, social ills, hate, violence, discrimination, etc.


A spoken word poetry format called slam poetry features loud, passionate and radical poems that display high-spirited or powerful content as well loud gestures and high pitch sounds or tempo.


Slam or power poetry is one of word art forms that does not follow any particular rhyming scheme. However, internal rhyming, slant rhyming, part-rhyming, repetitions, pattern poetic language art forms may be used.

  • · Compose the gateway line or the first line of the piece to introduce the theme or issue in a clear, eloquent way

  • · Focus on sensory details with choosing right kind of words for the lyrics

  • · Use repetition, refrain and word-play with non-traditional language art forms

  • · Choose gestures with certain words for writing your piece

  • · Self-recite, practice, improve to make it sound reasonable

  • · Set your poem aside for some time, then once again recite to revise it

  • · Practice for over-learning

  • · Perform on stage

  • · End with an strong message and call for for transformation
