SOME IMPORTANT SPELLING RULES OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE


It has been found that at the middle school level, if three spelling rules are understood and practiced, both the vocabulary and correct spelling of English words get enhanced.

Important spelling rules are as follows


RULE-1: Letter-Doubling


1.1 Single syllable words: One vowel+ one consonant at the end of word= doubling of consonant when other letters added to change the word...doubling is not done if word has 2 consonants

1.1,1 Slip-ping...begin-ning...rob-ber...glad-der...fun-ny...plan-ning...bit-ten..stop-page

1.2 Two or more syllable words: Consonant doubled if the accent is on last syllable

1.2.1 ad-mit-ting...for-bid-ding..quar-rel-ling...la-bel-led (last syllable accented)

al-ter-ing...gar-den—er (last syllable not accented)


RULE-2: Final e


2.1 Mono –syllabic words ending with single e = New words made by dropping e

2.1,1 weave-weaving...rule-ruler...ice-icy...noise-noisy..arrive-arrival..fame-famous


2.2 for multi-syllabic words, in case the last syllable has a, or y, then e is not dropped

2.2.1 Use-useless..tire-tiresome..peace-peaceful..safe-safety, true-truth...paste- pastry


2.3 Exceptions in following words

2.3.1 dye-dyeing...hoe-hoeing..lie-lying...die-dying...tie-tying


(3) RULE-3: Final y


3.1 For y preceded by a consonant, y is changed to i for new word formation (not so if preceded by vowel)


3.1.1 busy-business...reply-replied...happy-happiness..country-countries...lazy-laziness...story-stories...fury-furious...empty-emptiness


3.1.2 Exceptions: boy-boys...shy-shyness-shly...sly-slyness-slyly


(4) RULE-4: Dropping of final l


4.1 For words added to ‘All’ or other words with ‘ll’ one l is dropped


4.1.1 all-always...all-already...all-almighty..all-almost...all-although..all-altogether

4.1.2 full-fulness..fulfil...belfry...welcome...welfare


4.2 when ‘full’ is added after another word, one l is dropped


4.2,2 handful...truthful...doubtful...cheerful...dreadful..wonderful, beautiful



(5) RULE-5: Choosing ‘ie’ or ‘ei’


5.1 For words with c-consonant words ‘ei’ is used

5.1.1 receipt.. deceit..receive..deceive Exceptions:either...neither..foreign..forfeit..heifer..height..heist..leisure..seize..sovereign..their..weird


5.2 For rest of the words with consonants other than c, ie is used


5.2.1 chief..grief..relieve..relief...belief..thief..piece..field
