Special on International Day of Yoga: Need to popularize medical yoga as therapeutic practice

International Day of Yoga is going to to be observed on June 21. There is a need to make a shift from ritualistic events to application of yoga in psychology, sociology, education, counselling, personality development and medical areas

Medical or therapeutic yoga makes use of yoga practices for the prevention and treatment of certain medical conditions. Often, it is considered to be a complementary or alternative method for medical therapy in the treatment of the conditions related to stress, anxiety, depression, mood disorders and mental health problems.

When medical yoga is done under the guidance of a therapist with diagnosis and a protoco, it leads to a sense of well-being, relaxation, self-confidence besides treating the problems such as high blood pressure; back pain; arthritis; asthma; sinusitis; hay fever, etc.

Headache.

Some studies report that therapist-administered integrated yoga therapy (IAYT), or specific combinations of yoga postures (Asana), regulated breathing (Pranayama), body cleansing techniques (Kriya), meditation (Dhyana), and chanting (Mantras) have shown to reduce medication scores and blood plasma glucose levels. However, the therapeutic intervention has to prescribed by a certified expert with a follow-up after a thorough diagnosis.
