During their Dasalakhshan or Paryushan Parva festival this year, many followers of Jainism have hoisted the new five-coloured flag in their temples and houses.

This flag is their religious symbol which represents the basic precepts and values of Jainism as said in the following haiku.

Haiku

Five-coloured Jain flag-

Red, yellow, white, green, and black / blue -

Reminds supreme beings.

White's for Arihants

Conquerors of mind's evils -

The self-realized ones

White's for Ahimsa,

Purity, truth, non-stealing

Non-acquisition

Red is for Siddhi

To live with truthfulness -

That nothing is ours

Yellow is Acharya

The great masters of adepts

Wisdom and ethics

Green – Upadhyaya -

The apt teachers of scriptures

Living a chaste life

Black / blue represents monks

Who're renuncitiates, detached

Striving to know Self
