Spiritual Significance of Jain Deepavali: A short note and couplets

SHORT NOTE

Jain Deepavali 2025 is being celebrated on Monday, October 20, 2025, to commemorate the attainment of Nirvana (liberation) by Lord Mahavira - the 24th Tirthankar of the Jain Dharma with offering of the Nirvan Ladoo followed by fasting and lighting lamps in memory of Lord Mahavira's penance. For the followers. it is also a time for selfless service and reflecting on mind's purity and self-knowledge.

This Jain festival is celebrated on the same day as the Hindu festival Diwalin marked by lighting lamps, cleaning and decorating homes, exchanging greetings, and reflecting on values of humanism, compassion, justice, equity and inclusion.

The festival is meant to remind us that purpose of life to atain liberation by lighting the flame of inner wisdom over material desires, and purifying the soul through non-violence, self-discipline and amity.

Couplets

Non-violence is true light of the soul,

It makes you free and glorifies your role.

Forgiveness softens walls of hate 'n spite.

And fill your soul with hope's embracing light.

So let your kindness be a guiding star,

And break chains, no matter who you are.

self-restrain's hand, a steady grace,

A friendly smile on every face.

No angry word, no violent deed,

A life made pure, a planted seed.

The flame within, a gentle guide,

Outshines the things we keep inside.
